As a foreign language teacher, I use technology as a means of encouraging students to express themselves in Spanish. It is time for a change! Teachers cannot be using the same tools from the past and we need to move toward the future. Nowadays students think and act differently from students from the past, mostly because of the increasing importance of technology in their everydays lives. It is time to start reaching high level of effective instruction. Therefore it is necessary to incorporate the tools offered by technology.

Glogster is a social network that allows students to create interactive posters. It looks like a poster, but readers can interact with the content. The students can inserts text, images, photos, audio, videos, special effects and other elements into their glogs to generate a multimedia online creation. Posters can be shared with other users on the site, embedded in external wikis or blogs, and shared via many social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Students can integrate dynamic multi-sensory resources into traditionally text-oriented tasks.

Voicethread is a tool that allows users to record text and audio comments about uploaded images. Students enjoy the immediate feedback that the program provides. I also use the program to provide visual images that solicit oral comments from student. They enjoy listening to their own voices and the images serve to “warm up” students to write their own compositions. As a Spanish teacher, I believe that this technology really helps improve the fluency of my students. Voicethread is an excellent collaborative and multimedia slide show which can be used as a web-based activity to facilitate students’ language learning. Students can navigate the slides which have been uploaded in the formats of images, documents and videos, and then they can use voice, text, audio file, or video to make comments in Spanish. This makes their learning more interesting. Collecting group conversations in one place, sharing their voices and hearing other people’s voices can definitely benefit students’ learning in a collaborative way.

Voki is a technology that students could use for their individual oral projects. Allows students to create personalized speaking avatars. This will make the speaking projects more enjoyable.

Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software that opens up a new world between whiteboards and slides. The zoomable canvas makes it fun to explore. This new technology is changing how teachers share ideas and is making students saying goodbye to boring slideshows presentations.
